the divine spring of abundant life

This post is a continuation of the previous post: to understand the abundant life. If you have not yet read that post, I would highly recommend it.

I don’t know about you … but I struggle to understand and experience the abundant life spoken of in Scripture … so I am seeking to understand what living the abundant life is really all about. What Paul recorded in his letter to the Ephesians seems to suggest a bit of a problem …

Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works withIN us, to Him be the glory in the church and IN Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen. Ephesians 3:20-21 (NASB)

GOD IS ABLE to do far more abundantly than we ask via prayer or than we think. Our human capacity for understanding and expectation of what God can and will do is oftentimes limited by our man-sized prayers and thinking. The Lord revealed that to the prophet Isaiah …

“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” declares the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways And My thoughts than your thoughts. Isaiah 55:8-9 (NASB)

We do not know how to pray as we should … but God even has an intercessor to overcome our man-sized prayers …

In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. Romans 8:26-27 (NASB)

What a comfort to know that God’s plan has the Holy Spirit interceding for each of us according to the His will … WOW!

We need God-sized prayers and God-sized thinking … we need to unleash God-sized faith!!!

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1 (NASB)

Did you notice this phrase in the Eph 3:20-21 passage above? according to the power that works withIN you … understanding that phrase just may be key to unleashing the abundant life … really meditate on this next passage considering Who is the Abundant Life and where He lives …

Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ IN God. When CHRIST, WHO IS OUR LIFE, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory.  Colossians 3:1-4 (NASB)

Christ is our life … Christ is our life … Christ is our life … Christ is our life …

As I consider that passage, I see my problem:  Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. This reveals a real problem in my life.

While Christ is our life, consider how God pours that life INto us …

However, you are not in the flesh but IN the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells IN you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. If Christ is IN you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells IN you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells IN you.  Romans 8:9-11 (NASB)

Through His Holy Spirit, God give us life … life abundantly!

David’s cup runneth over … Jesus promises life abundant … and … flowing rivers of living water …

Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink.  He who believes IN Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.'”    But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed IN Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. John 7:37-39 (NASB)

From the indwelling and unquenched presence of Christ Jesus and the Holy Spirit comes abundant life … and the rivers of living water flow from the throne of God and of the Lamb …

Then he showed me a river of the water of life, clear as crystal, coming from the throne of God and of the Lamb, in the middle of its street. On either side of the river was the tree of life, bearing twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit every month; and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. Revelation 22:1-2 (NASB)

You see … the cup running over, the abundant life, the flowing rivers of living water … the overflows are not intended to benefit me and you … they are about those still to be filled with the healing of the nations that only comes through Christ Jesus in the fruitful overflow of His followers.

But here’s the challenge.  Before the overflow can begin, we must be filled to the fullness of God (Eph 3:19).  After all, fullness precedes overflowing.

So very, very much to consider …

About bwebbjr

A grandfather, father, husband, man, and a child of God who is following Christ Jesus and working out his salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work IN me, both to will and to work for His good pleasure (Philippians 2:12-13). I dodged my first bullet with cancer when a cancerous polyp was removed in a sigmoid colectomy surgery in August 2007. Four years later, in the midst of a second colectomy surgery we discovered I had Stage IV metastatic colon cancer. Rather than colectomy surgery I had colostomy surgery, which now means the colostomy bag is a part of my everyday life ... with the emphasis on life. God has given us a peace beyond understanding as my wife and I have traveled this journey. By the grace of God I am blessed to be a 6 plus year cancer survivor aka warrior. In writing, I am often wrestling with my own personal struggles and beliefs and in the midst God leads me to a lesson He wants me to learn ... or sometimes He simply touches me in the revelation of Himself. My hope is that the result you see here might touch your heart and glorify God. And let me be clear ... I am not the only one with something to say. Please join in the conversation sharing your faith, your cancer experiences, etc. I would love to hear from you. Bernie
