Why me?

That two word question is one that most of us wrestle with when faced with bad news, bad circumstances, bad health, etc … I’m sure you get the picture.

When faced with cancer, that question never came to mind for me. Based on what Christ Jesus experienced for me in the midst of His arrest, trial, beatings and crucifixion … well, pretty much any and everything I might experience pales in comparison and simply demands God provided faith and endurance … not a questioning heart. That doesn’t mean I don’t falter and fear from time to time … but I don’t wrestle with the ‘Why me?’ question.

On the contrary … finding myself in the midst of incredible blessings such as described in the last post … well, that does prompt me to ask the question ‘Why me?’

As I considered this question after yesterday’s good news, this passage of Scripture repeatedly echoed in my mind like it has at no other time in my life … I am bolding the entire passage because I am convicted by every word …

Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is IN you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (ESV)

Do I live my life as if I am not my own? I cannot truthfully answer that in the affirmative.

Do I live my life based on the truth that God bought me at the price His one and only Son paid for me on the cross?   Forgive me Lord … no.

Does having this ‘seemingly’ additional time (although only from my perspective) mean there are specific good works God has prepared beforehand that I should not only be seeking out, but also walking in?

For we are His workmanship, created IN Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:10 (ESV)

I am overwhelmingly convicted that this additional time is not simply given by God for my pleasure and enjoyment … it is given that the will of God … His purpose … be fulfilled in the midst of those works He has prepared beforehand specifically for me.

… the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God. And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. Romans 8:26-28 (ESV)

Oh heavenly Father, may the Holy Spirit lead me to and in the good works you have foreordained for me to walk in!!!

About bwebbjr

A grandfather, father, husband, man, and a child of God who is following Christ Jesus and working out his salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work IN me, both to will and to work for His good pleasure (Philippians 2:12-13). I dodged my first bullet with cancer when a cancerous polyp was removed in a sigmoid colectomy surgery in August 2007. Four years later, in the midst of a second colectomy surgery we discovered I had Stage IV metastatic colon cancer. Rather than colectomy surgery I had colostomy surgery, which now means the colostomy bag is a part of my everyday life ... with the emphasis on life. God has given us a peace beyond understanding as my wife and I have traveled this journey. By the grace of God I am blessed to be a 6 plus year cancer survivor aka warrior. In writing, I am often wrestling with my own personal struggles and beliefs and in the midst God leads me to a lesson He wants me to learn ... or sometimes He simply touches me in the revelation of Himself. My hope is that the result you see here might touch your heart and glorify God. And let me be clear ... I am not the only one with something to say. Please join in the conversation sharing your faith, your cancer experiences, etc. I would love to hear from you. Bernie
