Before starting today’s post, this next verse should have had a prominent place in yesterday’s post … so a day late … but definitely NOT a dollar short.
And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s descendants, heirs according to promise. Galatians 3:29 (NASB)
Not only are we heirs according to the promise God made to Abraham, we are heirs of God … joint heirs with Christ!
For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. Romans 8:14-17 (KJV)
Typically as heirs, we are receiving something without cost … but please note that as joint-heirs with Christ not only will we be glorified together … we suffer with Him.
For to you it has been granted for Christ’s sake, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake … Philippians 1:29 (NASB)
While many balk at such suffering, note the response the apostles modeled in suffering for His name sake … rejoicing!
They took his advice; and after calling the apostles in, they flogged them and ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and then released them. So they went on their way from the presence of the Council, rejoicing that they had been considered worthy to suffer shame for His name. And every day, in the temple and from house to house, they kept right on teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ. Acts 5:40-42 (NASB)
OK, we’re joint-heirs with Christ … but what exactly did He inherit?
God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of ALL things, through whom also He made the world. Hebrews 1:1-2 (NASB)
In yesterday’s post, the primary focus seemed to be on our inheritance in the hereafter rather than in the here and now … let’s take a look at the latter today …
I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it ABUNDANTLY. John 10:9-10 (NASB)
Rather than continuing to allow us to be ‘dead men walking’, Jesus came that we might be made alive and we would have life abundantly … please note … as God sees abundance … not as the world sees it. Consider these words of Peter …
Simon Peter, a bond-servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who have received a faith of the same kind as ours, by the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ: Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord; seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence. For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, so that by them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust. Now for this very reason also, applying all DILIGENCE, in your faith supply moral excellence, and in your moral excellence, knowledge, and in your knowledge, self-control, and in your self-control, perseverance, and in your perseverance, godliness, and in your godliness, brotherly kindness, and in your brotherly kindness, love. For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they render you neither useless nor unfruitful in the true knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For he who lacks these qualities is blind or short-sighted, having forgotten his purification from his former sins. Therefore, brethren, be all the more DILIGENT to make certain about His calling and choosing you; for as long as you practice these things, you will never stumble; for in this way the entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be ABUNDANTLY supplied to you. 2 Peter 1:1-11 (NASB)
In this next passage I’m just going to highlight, what to me seems to be key parts of our inheritance in the here and now with an aim to the hereafter … please note where we all started from …
For we also once were foolish ourselves, disobedient, deceived, enslaved to various lusts and pleasures, spending our life in malice and envy, hateful, hating one another. But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared, He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by His grace we would be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. Titus 3:3-7 (NASB)
How would you divine the abundant life? IMHO I believe the divine definition is when a believer is filled up to ALL the FULLNESS of God … the FULLNESS of Christ!
For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the FULLNESS of God. Ephesians 3:14-19 (NASB)
(He who descended is Himself also He who ascended far above all the heavens, so that He might fill all things.) And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ; until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the FULLNESS of Christ. Ephesians 4:10-13 (NASB)
Finally … for all you folks out there who can’t think about being heirs … an inheritance … without thinking of riches … please consider …
To me (Paul), the very least of all saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the UNFATHOMABLE riches of Christ … Ephesians 3:8 (NASB)
No earthly inheritance ever offers unfathomable riches … only the riches found IN Christ Jesus are unfathomable!
Praise God … we are joint-heirs with Christ Jesus!!!
