God defined freedom and liberty

Contrary to the courts and contrary to what most people believe, God defined freedom is not about the individual … it’s about the community.

Military forces and rebels fight and die for the freedom of nations … Christ Jesus fought and died for the freedom of a lost and condemned world.

Consider the words of Paul in his letter to the churches in the Roman province of Galatia …

For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For the whole Law is fulfilled in one word, in the statement, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Galatians 5:13-14 (NASB)

Stop and consider for a moment … how often are the debates about freedom on behalf of the individual … on behalf of the flesh … on behalf of human nature?  And how many times is the freedom debate focused on loving and serving one another?

Act as free men, and do not use your freedom as a covering for evil, but use it as bondslaves of God. 1 Peter 2:16 (NASB)

How often is freedom used to empower the evil men do?  And how often do we use freedom to be bondslaves of God?

What is the source of true liberty?

Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. 2 Corinthians 3:17 (NASB)

Liberty is found IN the Lord Jesus Christ and where the Spirit of the Lord is.

But it was because of the false brethren secretly brought in, who had sneaked in to spy out our liberty which we have IN Christ Jesus, in order to bring us into bondage. Galatians 2:4 (NASB)

True freedom is given freely …

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life IN Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23 (NASB)

Christ Jesus has set us free from condemnation and from the law of sin and death …

Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are IN Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life IN Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. Romans 8:1-2 (NASB)

But freedom never comes without costs … Jesus paid for our freedom on the cross.

By this the love of God was manifested IN us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 1 John 4:9-10 (NASB)

For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God IN your body.  1 Corinthians 6:20 (NASB)

You were bought with a price; do not become slaves of men.  1 Corinthians 7:23 (NASB)

The cost to the child of God … self-denial, taking up one’s cross, losing one’s life for the sake of Jesus … but we can’t buy our freedom … this is the cost of following Jesus.

And He summoned the crowd with His disciples, and said to them, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it.” Mark 8:34-35 (NASB)

God offers warnings regarding liberty and freedom … first and foremost in how you and I use our God given liberty …

But take care that this liberty of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak. 1 Corinthians 8:9 (NASB)

The greatest risk to our liberty and freedom comes from others … oftentimes those who have inherited freedom through the sacrifice of others, fail to realize the cost and see freedom as an individual right that is both self-serving and self-glorying …. dishonoring the sacrifice of others … and more specifically the crucifixion of Christ Jesus.

But it was because of the false brethren secretly brought in, who had sneaked in to spy out our liberty which we have IN Christ Jesus, in order to bring us into bondage. Galatians 2:4 (NASB)

A liberty … a freedom … that is self-serving rather than others-serving and God-serving is neither liberty nor freedom.  This counterfeit championed by the false brethren and the disciples of this world will only once again enslave us and put us back into bondage to the law of sin and death … that Jesus set us free from!

For speaking out arrogant words of vanity they entice by fleshly desires, by sensuality, those who barely escape from the ones who live in error, promising them freedom while they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by what a man is overcome, by this he is enslaved. 2 Peter 2:18-19 (NASB)

Stand firm IN Christ Jesus and the freedom found only IN Him!!!

It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery. Galatians 5:1 (NASB)

On this July 4th, let’s celebrate our God-given freedom and liberty!

About bwebbjr

A grandfather, father, husband, man, and a child of God who is following Christ Jesus and working out his salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work IN me, both to will and to work for His good pleasure (Philippians 2:12-13). I dodged my first bullet with cancer when a cancerous polyp was removed in a sigmoid colectomy surgery in August 2007. Four years later, in the midst of a second colectomy surgery we discovered I had Stage IV metastatic colon cancer. Rather than colectomy surgery I had colostomy surgery, which now means the colostomy bag is a part of my everyday life ... with the emphasis on life. God has given us a peace beyond understanding as my wife and I have traveled this journey. By the grace of God I am blessed to be a 6 plus year cancer survivor aka warrior. In writing, I am often wrestling with my own personal struggles and beliefs and in the midst God leads me to a lesson He wants me to learn ... or sometimes He simply touches me in the revelation of Himself. My hope is that the result you see here might touch your heart and glorify God. And let me be clear ... I am not the only one with something to say. Please join in the conversation sharing your faith, your cancer experiences, etc. I would love to hear from you. Bernie
