For our family devotional time each evening, we are currently going thru The Duck Commander Devotional compiled by the eldest Robertson son Alan. Each devotional entry is written by either one of the Robertson clan or one of the friends of the family. We were late in getting started for the year so currently we are only on the February 1st entry.
My wife, grandson and I all found this latest entry extremely powerful and convicting so I thought I would share it here on the blog in its entirety… this devo was written by patriarch Phil Robertson. Read and consider:
You Are Defined by Your Father
If anyone is IN Christ, the new creation has come. The old has gone, the new is here. – 2 Corinthians 5:17
ANYONE WHO WAS around me the first twenty-eight years of my life quickly knew that I was no son of God. They could tell by my speech, my attitude, and my actions. I could not hide my evil ways, nor did I try to. I did what I pleased, and my whole world revolved around me and my selfish whims. Now that I am a new creation, anyone who is around me knows it immediately. I make it a point to make sure they know – by my speech, my attitudes, and my actions. You too, are known by those around you by what they see IN you. You have a choice to make – will you be a son of God or a son of the devil? There are no other options. Your life is yours to live, and your choices are yours to make. My advice is that you choose to honor God with your life.
Father, thank You for creating the “new me”! I was dead – now I’m alive. I was lost, now I’m found – all by Your hand. Thank you. Amen.
Bernie again … ever the Berean and considering my decision to share the devotional here on the blog, here are a few background passages of Scripture I found myself drawn to after reading this devotional …
Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth and have come from God, for I have not even come on My own initiative, but He sent Me. Why do you not understand what I am saying? It is because you cannot hear My word. You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” John 8:42-44 (NASB)
Conduct yourselves with wisdom toward outsiders, making the most of the opportunity. Let your speech always be with grace, as though seasoned with salt, so that you will know how you should respond to each person. Colossians 4:5-6 (NASB)
But you did not learn Christ in this way, if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught in Him, just as truth is in Jesus, that, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth. Ephesians 4:20-24 (NASB)
But now you also, put them all aside: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive speech from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, since you laid aside the old self with its evil practices, and have put on the new self who is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created him— Colossians 3:8-10 (NASB)
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Galatians 5:22-24 (NASB)
The fruit of the Spirit sounds like attitude to me.
Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and truth. We will know by this that we are of the truth, and will assure our heart before Him in whatever our heart condemns us; for God is greater than our heart and knows all things. 1 John 3:18-20 (ESV)
“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” John 13:34-35 (NASB)
“You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain, so that whatever you ask of the Father in My name He may give to you.” John 15:16 (NASB)
And yet in some unexplained divine way we do still have the will to make a choice … to rebel or respond.
A woman named Lydia, from the city of Thyatira, a seller of purple fabrics, a worshiper of God, was listening; and the Lord opened her heart to respond to the things spoken by Paul. Acts 16:14 (NASB)
My family recommends The Duck Commander Devotional.
