learning the great omission … I mean commission

Everybody is familiar with the closing words of Jesus in the 28th chapter of Matthew …

Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them.  And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted. (vs 16,17)

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Invite folks to church and make them church members, sprinkling them in the name of the Father and of the Son.   And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

No, that’s not right … even if it is what I’ve experienced …the great omission …

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Invite folks to church and make converts of them, sprinkling them in the name of the Father and of the Son.   And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Yes, I know that’s what it seems like sometimes …

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Invite folks to church and make converts of all nations, sprinkling them in the name of the Father and of the Son.   And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

One mistake fixed …

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make converts of all nations, sprinkling them in the name of the Father and of the Son.  And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

And another …

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make converts of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son.   And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Learning is such an iterative process …

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make converts of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Holy Ghost, Holy Spirit … always sounded kinda scary until I experienced His indwelling presence …

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make converts of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have suggested to you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

No, not based on how I interpreted it for most of my life …

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make converts of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

OK, that’s more like it …

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make converts of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And if they like, they will ask you to disciple them.  And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

After all targets … I mean spiritual babes … know what is best for themselves …

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make converts of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And offer discipleship programs for those who are interested.  And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Sign-up, class, certificate or accomplishment, anyone … anyone … anyone? Relationships optional …

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. GO therefore and MAKE DISCIPLES of all nations, BAPTIZING them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy SpiritTEACHING them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I AM WITH YOU ALWAYS, to the end of the age.”

Oh Lord, convict us, guide us to fulfill Your Great Commission just as you commanded!

So thankful to be part of a church that practices what Jesus preached!

About bwebbjr

A grandfather, father, husband, man, and a child of God who is following Christ Jesus and working out his salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work IN me, both to will and to work for His good pleasure (Philippians 2:12-13). I dodged my first bullet with cancer when a cancerous polyp was removed in a sigmoid colectomy surgery in August 2007. Four years later, in the midst of a second colectomy surgery we discovered I had Stage IV metastatic colon cancer. Rather than colectomy surgery I had colostomy surgery, which now means the colostomy bag is a part of my everyday life ... with the emphasis on life. God has given us a peace beyond understanding as my wife and I have traveled this journey. By the grace of God I am blessed to be a 6 plus year cancer survivor aka warrior. In writing, I am often wrestling with my own personal struggles and beliefs and in the midst God leads me to a lesson He wants me to learn ... or sometimes He simply touches me in the revelation of Himself. My hope is that the result you see here might touch your heart and glorify God. And let me be clear ... I am not the only one with something to say. Please join in the conversation sharing your faith, your cancer experiences, etc. I would love to hear from you. Bernie
