the battle over wisdom

Have you ever stopped to consider that one of the enemy’s greatest weapons used in preventing reconciliation to God is the wisdom of the world aka earthly wisdom aka the wisdom of man?

The ruler of this world (John 12:31,14:30,16:11), the prince of the power of the air (Satan) is hard at work doing all that he and his band of demons can do to set the course of the world (Ephesians 2:2) and draw man into fully embracing all that is in that world.  And one of his chief weapons in that battle is his use of the wisdom of the world in opposition to the wisdom of God.

Have you ever stopped to consider when this battle over wisdom for man began?

The battle over wisdom is really a battle over trust … will you trust the wisdom of God, the wisdom of the world or the wisdom of man (really the same thing)?

The enemy unveiled this weapon in the garden of Eden.

First, take a look at the wisdom of God …

The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.  And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden,  but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”  Genesis 2:15-17 (ESV)

Remember, at the end of day 6, after He created man, that God did a creation assessment …

And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was VERY GOOD. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.  Genesis 1:31 (ESV)

The work of creation was complete.  The wisdom of God was trusted without question.  And the trust between God and mankind was intact.

And then the serpent showed up, determined to cast doubt on the wisdom of God and subsequently undermine and destroy the trust between God and mankind …

Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made.  He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?”  And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden,  but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.'”  But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die.  For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”  Genesis 3:1-5 (ESV)

So the wisdom of the world … a world of Satan’s making … cast doubt on the God spoken wisdom that Adam and Eve had received … and now mankind was faced with his first temptation.  Unfortunately Adam and Eve did not choose the way of escape (1 Corinthians 10:13)

So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.  Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked.  Genesis 3:6-7 (ESV)

And sin and death entered the world …

Please note … the wisdom of the world is deceiving … what the serpent told Eve was a deception … a lie … in his first encounter with man the enemy found that the wisdom of the world could be a very effective weapon against the wisdom of God …

However, which wisdom proved true?  The wisdom of the world as offered through the serpent?  Or the wisdom of God?

The wisdom of God! On that day, death entered into the world exactly as God had told Adam it would.

So do you test all wisdom to see if it is from God or from the world?

For the vast majority of my life I blindly accepted and embraced the wisdom of the world, and then God began to reveal some alarming discrepancies between the wisdom of the world that I was embracing and His wisdom and truth.  And then I became quite the Berean … testing all wisdom against Scripture and the leading of the Holy Spirit.  Consider the following …

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.  By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God,  and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already.  Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. They are from the world; therefore they speak from the world, and the world listens to them.  We are from God. Whoever knows God listens to us; whoever is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error.  1 John 4:1-6 (ESV)

Wisdom … we all have choices to make … may the Holy Spirit lead us to choose wisely!

About bwebbjr

A grandfather, father, husband, man, and a child of God who is following Christ Jesus and working out his salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work IN me, both to will and to work for His good pleasure (Philippians 2:12-13). I dodged my first bullet with cancer when a cancerous polyp was removed in a sigmoid colectomy surgery in August 2007. Four years later, in the midst of a second colectomy surgery we discovered I had Stage IV metastatic colon cancer. Rather than colectomy surgery I had colostomy surgery, which now means the colostomy bag is a part of my everyday life ... with the emphasis on life. God has given us a peace beyond understanding as my wife and I have traveled this journey. By the grace of God I am blessed to be a 6 plus year cancer survivor aka warrior. In writing, I am often wrestling with my own personal struggles and beliefs and in the midst God leads me to a lesson He wants me to learn ... or sometimes He simply touches me in the revelation of Himself. My hope is that the result you see here might touch your heart and glorify God. And let me be clear ... I am not the only one with something to say. Please join in the conversation sharing your faith, your cancer experiences, etc. I would love to hear from you. Bernie
