Encountered the following passage of Scripture from Exodus in my lunchtime Bible reading and while I’ve heard this said of prayer many times before, this is the first time I recall seeing it spelled out in Scripture. This whole passage is powerful but pay close attention the verse I have bolded …
Now Moses used to take the tent and pitch it outside the camp, far off from the camp, and he called it the tent of meeting. And everyone who sought the LORD would go out to the tent of meeting, which was outside the camp. Whenever Moses went out to the tent, all the people would rise up, and each would stand at his tent door, and watch Moses until he had gone into the tent. When Moses entered the tent, the pillar of cloud would descend and stand at the entrance of the tent, and the LORD would speak with Moses. And when all the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance of the tent, all the people would rise up and worship, each at his tent door. Thus the LORD used to speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. When Moses turned again into the camp, his assistant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, would not depart from the tent. Exodus 33:7-11 (ESV)
WOW! The Lord spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. WOW!
Jesus provides some more insight into this divine friendship …
“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. These things I command you, so that you will love one another. John 15:12-17 (ESV)
A little recap:
- We are friends of Jesus if we do what He has commanded us (Did you see it? What He commanded us is revealed two times in the above passage.).
- We are friends of Jesus for He revealed to us all that He heard from the Father.
- We are friends of Jesus and greatly loved, for He lay down His life for us.
In case you missed it, in the end of that passage Jesus addressed the issue of prayers by His friends …
Just another aspect of our multi-faceted relationship with the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Thank you Lord!!!
